Lets talk about using
color and special formats in e-mail:
Well it can be done quite easily if you follow a few steps in setting you internet mail.
Select Mail button, select Options, select Send, check HTML (Hyper Text Markup
Language) option. Next time you select new message you should see the HTML
formatting tool bar. If not, choose Format, and select HTML. Do it the
way you want to from there. Once you have your e-mail showing HTML formatting tool
bar each time you choose New Message, then you are set to write in color or special
formats. Now you can call up your word processor and build it the way you want it in
color and special formatting and then just copy it onto the clipboard and then paste right
into the HTML e-mail box that is waiting for your message. You don't have to
be on line while you prepare your document. Get the document ready, copy it to clipboard,
then go on line and paste it into e-mail. If your e-mail recipient
complains about receiving scrambled mail, then you will just have to send that individual
text only.
Downloading files:
I know we talked about this some before, but some still didn't get it. How to
download, check for virus, and then open a file. Here is one method:
(notice I said one method)
(1) Create new folder called Work.
(2) Click on item to download.
(3) You will be asked open or save to disk.
(4) Choose save to disk.
(5) You will be asked where to save it?
(6) Choose the Work directory you built.
(7) Let it download to the Work directory.
(8) Use your virus checker to check the Work directory.
(9) If your virus checker doesn't find a virus, then move file to directory of your choice
or open it and let it install where it wants to place
itself on your drive.
What choices do you have if the virus checker finds a virus?
Your best choice is delete the file immediately
and get the file somewhere else.
(10) Pay attention where the file installs to if possible, like what directory.
(11) Didn't see it, OK, click on Start and look in list of programs.
(12) Not there, then click Start, Programs, Explorer, put in name of program or file and
let the Explorer find it.
(13) Double click on the program's Install.exe and let it install.
(14) If you are still confused then ask for help on the enet wall and someone will
probably help you.
Are you tired of the
"obnoxious" beep in Win95 when you click in the wrong place with the mouse
pointer? Would you like to change that beep to something else?
Sorry, this process has many steps
and may not be for the inexperienced user:
Well, you don't have to put up with sounds in Win95 that you don't like. If you
really want another sound that can be used in place of the beep then at some risk of
offending someone ... which I probably do with misspelled words, poorly constructed
phrases, and other things probably done on purpose, I have included two attached files.
You are welcome to share these wave files with anyone else that is tired of
the beep that I am referring to. The next problem is explaining how you get the file
from here to there if you want to try it.
Of course you can listen to the wav files ahead of time by double clicking on each one and
let your computer play them. OK, so you listened to them and they aren't that
special. Well, this is more of a practice exercise in Win95 that gives you an edge
on other users anyway. If you don't have time and don't want the challenge, OK,
don't read past this line. Nothing ventured on your computer nothing gained on your
computer. You learn to use that computer by trying to do new things, right. I
know, you are saying, "Who needs it anyway. I like the beep I have."
That's OK, we are not going to erase the old beep, just use another one for awhile.
You can always change back to the old beep if you don't lose these instructions.
Well, now that you have read this far you must have accepted the challenge.
Steps for getting the attached files from the e-mail attachment to your hard drive and
into the correct folder:
(1) Notice as you read this e-mail that your From and Subject bar is highlighted and a
paper clip icon(attached file) is showing to the left end of the bar.
(2) Double click on the highlighted bar.
(3) File attachment icon now shows at the bottom window of the e-mail.
(4) Point to the icon of the attached file and click. Icon is now highlighted.
(5) Click on right button of the mouse.
(6) Click on save as.
(7) Double click on My Computer.
(8) Double click on drive (c:).
(9) Click on right arrow until you find Windows folder.
(10) Double click on Windows.
(11) Double click on Media.
(12) If Media shows in Save in box, then click save.
(13) File is now listed in window with other Wave files.
(14) Repeat steps for each file.
(15) Close (x) after saving.
So we have saved the attached files to the Media folder in Windows.
To use a different sound file for windows:
(1) Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Sounds. (Sounds icon may be far to the bottom of
the Control Panel.)
(2) You should be able to click on each event listed and see name of wav file being used
or at least preview the sound by clicking on right arrow.
(3) Make you way to default sound until it is highlighted.
(4) Click Preview arrow to see if this is the sound you want to replace.
(5) Click Browse to look for replacement wav file.
(6) Media folder list appears in window with all wav files shown.
(7) Click on utohh.wav for male voice, click on Woops.wav for female voice.
(8) Name of file appears in File name box.
(9) Click preview to be sure of choice.
(10) Click OK to keep the file or cancel to not change the file.
(11) If you click OK to keep you are returned to Sounds tab page.
(12) File should appear in window and can be previewed again.
(13) Click apply and go change another sound if you want.
(14) Click OK.
(15) Click (x) on Control Panel
(16) To test your new sound, click on the Volume icon on the task bar and adjust the
sound,
as you adjust the sound you should hear one of the sounds you selected. If not you
probably forgot to click Apply or OK at step 10 or beyond, it happens. Also look at
the mute box in the volume setting to be sure there is no check mark there.
If you don't have your Win95, a CD ROM, 16 Mb RAM or more, sound card, external speakers,
one of the Quick Shot mikes yet, you may not be enjoying your computer as much as you
could be. Go into Bryan's Computer Store in Eastland and say "Dude Bryan, I
need all that stuff that Cowboy Jerry was talking about in those tips." He will
fix you right up.
Special note to English teachers, Librarians, and authors: Those of you that have
read this far have really suffered literary punishment. But that's OK, you can
just edit this as you read it, I know you can't help yourself anyway. Then save the
corrected document to your computer or print the corrected document and we will both feel
better. It's copyrighted but you can still correct the spelling, etc. before you
save it.
If you get a lot of e-mail and it gets to the point that you have trouble finding even
the most recent mail that has arrived, then this may help. This tip applies to all
your boxes including deleted mail box and maybe to other folders where you have organized
your e-mail.
If your e-mail in any viewing box (folder) is not in order so you can easily find it then,
from the Internet Mail page, choose View, Sort by .... you now see choices: From,
Subject, Received, and Ascending. If you want to view the mail by whom it is from,
check From. If you want to view the mail ordered by subject, then check Subject.
If you want to view the mail by the date it was received, then choose Received.
Last, you need to also check Ascending or if not checked will be in descending
order. I like to view my inbox with the mail in order by the received date and
descending (ascending not checked). I know then that any new mail arriving will
appear at the top of the list....and all the mail is in order with the most recent mail at
the top of the list.
You can make choices for each of the boxes or folders you have then in email. It's
easy to change the settings if you change your mind at any point. You won't hurt
your computer by experimenting with changes in this area. Bryan says "cool man,
cool, followed by big grin".
Create your own Quick
Links
Internet Explorer's Favorites are a great way to keep track of all the Web pages you
visit periodically. However, Internet Explorer provides an even more convenient
method of quickly visiting up to five of your absolute favorite Web sites.
Next time I will go through the steps and discuss customizing your Quick
Links tool bar.
Some interesting sites:
Send your sweetie a card
dude or dudette:
My little sweetie sent me one. That's how I found out about this site.
http://www.bluemountainarts.com/index.html
An educational site about Native Americans with a section with little known facts,
some games and books for research given.
http://www.bluemountainarts.com/eng/nativeamer/NativeAmer.html
Don't forget .... tell Bryan
that Cowboy Jerry sent you in to buy another computer, one of the 200 MHz, 32Mb
RAM, 2 Mb sound card, mike, 33.6 Kb modem, .28 dot matrix, 20" monitor, and a
5 Gb drive should do.
